Details: iTRACS worked with the IT Director who wanted to ensure that physical infrastructure changes in his insurance company's large North American data center followed a prescribed change management process. Good corporate governance relies on effectively managed internal controls. Immediate and accurate information is critical to asset connectivity management within a data center.
The best way to insure compliance and reduce risk in data center cable management is through a comprehensive approach. The approach should combine physical asset management, hierarchically describing assets (NIC/server/cabinet/row/room/data center/etc.) in the environment, and showing the connectivity items (cables, power cords, patch cords) as managed assets.
iTRACS established a control framework for physical layer management within the data center. This framework included a connectivity work order system, an auditable log of infrastructure changes, an event notification system for anomalous conditions and the ability to correlate the physical infrastructure changes with their asset management and systems programs and processes.
