16. What’s the difference between iTRACS Physical Layer Manager and iTRACS Infrastructure Manager?

Answers:

1. Who is the iTRACS Corporation?

iTRACS Corporation provides enterprise software that lets organizations establish and manage best practices for changes within a data center or network infrastructure, so that executives can strategically direct, deploy and manage their facilities, networking and operations personnel and assets.

2. Do I have to have intelligent hardware to use iTRACS Physical Layer Manager?

No, intelligent hardware is not required to use iTRACS Physical Layer Manager software.

3. What does iTRACS Physical Layer Manager Software provide?

iTRACS PLM can help medium to enterprise level organizations manage their asset connectivity.

  • iTRACS PLM accomplishes this by providing data in an efficient and visual manner. Many customers utilized spreadsheets or other table based views to review their asset connectivity before switching to iTRACS PLM.
  • By providing information in a simple format iTRACS PLM makes it easier for organizations to ensure the accuracy of their data. In addition, iTRACS PLM can be integrated with external trusted sources of information to help ensure the accuracy of its information. iTRACS Corporation also offers several optional add-ons to iTRACS PLM that can assist in ensuring accuracy.
  • iTRACS PLM allows administrators to define individual and complex user rights. This allows administrators to better distribute relevant information to multiple departments within the same organization.
  • By presenting data to more individuals organizations can improve upon your existing business rules for asset connectivity management and change. Instead of utilizing multiple applications to accomplish the same tasks, an organization can potentially consolidate information into one centralized location.
  • iTRACS PLM also provides a full API and offers SDK training and assistance. By allowing users to customize the iTRACS PLM interface, users are able to define their own rules and processes. iTRACS PLM is not designed to tell an organization how it will conduct its change policy. Instead iTRACS PLM is designed to conform to your existing rules and processes. Integration with your existing business process can be done by iTRACS professional services, or through one of our partners.

4. What advantages does iTRACS Physical Layer Manager have over other Cable Management System products?

  • Full visualization of your assets connectivity string: Many CMS applications provide only a partial view of asset connectivity. With iTRACS PLM the user sees all of the relevant information in one clean and simple interface.
  • User definable security rights: By allowing administrators to provide more specific access. Many CMS applications simply provide all-write or all-read access with no areas in-between.
  • Configurable data management: iTRACS PLM allows organizations to define what assets they would like to document and what they need to document against those assets. Competing CMS applications typically have a limited number of predetermined classes and data fields.
  • Configurable reports: iTRACS PLM allows users to create their own reports using a point-and-click interface. Other CMS applications either contain only pre-populated reports, or require extensive scripting knowledge to create new reports.
  • Customizable interface: iTRACS PLM allows users to define their own user interfaces. This allows organizations to better incorporate their CMS with their existing policies and procedures. Most CMS applications have a rigid interface that cannot be modified.

5. How can my users connect to the iTRACS Physical Layer Manager Software?

iTRACS Physical Layer Manager offers users multiple access points to their data:

  • Client Graphical User Interface (GUI): This graphical interface is the main way most power users connect to their iTRACS database. Client connections may allow users read and write access (depending on their individual user rights). The Client GUI is also how all administrative functions are carried out (e.g. adding users).
  • Web Interface: The web interface utilizes user-editable ASP code to provide users with read-only access to their database. Users may view circuit traces, dictionary information, run reports and search for specific objects.
  • iLocator: iLocator is a small stand-alone application that is designed to run on the machines of users who do not require the full Client Interface. With iTRACS PLM, users search for database objects (i.e. a server). The results of that search are run against a list of pre-determined reports. iLocator can provide quick and easy access to important information.
  • MapView: The MapView feature can also be accessed via a web interface. Within this web interface, users may access and navigate through the MapViews that administrators have built through the Client GUI.

6. Can iTRACS Physical Layer Manager be integrated with other third-party products?

Yes. iTRACS PLM can be integrated into third-party applications using our full and thin client Application Programming Interface and comprehensive Software Development Kit.

7. How many database records will iTRACS Physical Layer Manager support?

The iTRACS PLM software database will support an unlimited amount of records, depending on your hardware's storage capacity.

8. How many concurrent users can be on iTRACS Physical Layer Manager?

An unlimited number of users can be on iTRACS PLM, however, the number of concurrent users is contingent upon the terms of your software license agreement.

9. On what platform does the iTRACS Physical Layer Manager software run?

iTRACS is designed to run on the Microsoft Family of operating systems. Windows 2003 Server or Advanced Server is recommended to run the iTRACS Server components. Windows XP Professional should be utilized for client access to the database.

10. Is iTRACS Physical Layer Manager a tiered software application?

Yes, iTRACS Physical Layer Manager utilizes three-tier software architecture.

  1. Database Layer – For its database, iTRACS Physical Layer Manager utilizes Sybase SQL Anywhere. The license and support for this database is included in the cost of iTRACS Physical Layer Manager. Sybase SQL Anywhere is designed to run in environments where a DBA is not available or desired.
  2. Object Layer – This is the iTRACS Physical Layer Manager server. The server software works as a bridge between the database and the 3rd layer.
  3. GUI Layer – All of the various ways that clients may access their information forms the GUI layer (web, client GUI, iLocator, MapView, web interface).

12. What is iTRACS iDiscover?

iTRACS iDiscover is an optional software module that discovers the logical connection between devices on your network. iTRACS Physical Layer Manager takes the connection information and places assets in their correct physical location. This is accomplished through an automated process based on the physical infrastructure documented within iTRACS Physical Layer Manager. In addition, iTRACS iDiscover can collect information via SNMP, WMI, and registry values. With iDiscover, you decrease the time needed to input and update your database, while obtaining physical and logical layer network information.

13. Can you collect data from my <Hardware Name> via SNMP?

More than likely yes. iTRACS iDiscover contains a variety of data collection points (OS, installed memory, etc.) which are available out-of-the-box. Other data can be collected from SNMP through customizations provided by iTRACS or an iTRACS-certified partner. This may include, but is not limited to, VOIP handset data (i.e. bios, firmware, extension), switch information (i.e. OS, total memory, free memory), and rack mounted PDUs (e.g. total power usage).

14. Is iTRACS iDiscover a network manager?

The iTRACS iDiscover module is not a replacement for a traditional NMS. It is used to track network assets and link the logical layer with the physical layer. iTRACS iDiscover can also serve as a virtual "bridge" between network management software and your network's hardware using the iTRACS API/SDK.

15. Do I need intelligent hardware to utilize iTRACS iDiscover?

Intelligent hardware is not required to utilize iTRACS iDiscover.

16. What’s the difference between iTRACS Physical Layer Manager and iTRACS Infrastructure Manager?

iTRACS Physical Layer Manager is a robust, enterprise-level software application that can be extensively customized and configured for large, enterprise networks, either with or without the use of intelligent hardware. iTRACS Physical Layer Manager also provides software enhancement modules to further customize the management of your network’s physical infrastructure.

iTRACS Infrastructure Manager is a product created by iTRACS only to be sold by participating OEM Partners. iTRACS Infrastructure Manager offers customers a simple interface for documenting work processes. iTRACS Infrastructure Manager also provides improved connectivity management and is only available with intelligent hardware.
